Description

Set in contemporary Israel, The Immortal Bartfuss is perhaps the most profound and powerful portrait of a Holocaust survivor ever drawn. Using the techniques of omission and indirection perfected in such masterpieces as Badenheim 1939 and To The Land Of The Cattails, Appelfeld tells the story of Bartfuss, enigmatically 'the immortal' because of his experience in the camps.

Professional Reviews

"Aharon Appelfeld creates a spiritual portrait of a man who survived the Holocaust and now resides in Israel. He is an exceedingly insular man, so deeply private as to seem inaccessible to the scrutiny of a novelist, and yet Mr. Appelfeld succeeds in describing him with great dramatic force and, most remarkably, he preserves the man's essence, his mysterious and sometimes hallucinatory private being. In this respect, the novel offers an extraordinary adventure in character portrayal that is reminiscent of THE STRANGER by Albert Camus, but more extreme in its vision of alienation, more daring in its art."

Notes

Aharon Appelfeld sets this unsettling novel in the 1980s, in Israel, where an aging, embittered, and miserly Holocaust survivor named Bartfuss is locked into a bad marriage with a woman who managed to escape the camps--and whom Bartfuss therefore resents. Paradoxically, his own experiences, which he feels should make him kinder and more generous, have had the opposite effect. As he approaches the end of his life, Bartfuss struggles to come to terms with his memories and to keep alive his compassion for others.
